FIRESIDE BROWNIES

Everything we love about the open flame, brought indoors and baked into something you can hold.

Autumn has a way of pulling everyone back inside. The evenings shorten, the air sharpens, and the instinct to gather turns from the backyard to the kitchen table. Fireside Brownies are what you bake when you want to answer that instinct with something generous.

Begin with the reason most of us fell in love with s'mores in the first place: the anticipation. The marshmallow on the stick, the chocolate waiting in the wings, the graham cracker ready to hold it all together.

Somewhere between the chocolate melting and the marshmallow taking on color, your kitchen fills with the scent of warm cocoa and caramelized sugar, and people begin wandering in to ask what is in the oven.

This is not a dessert that demands perfection. The marshmallow puffs turn golden on the outside and gooey on the inside, the edges turn chewy, the center stays fudgy, and every imperfection only makes them more inviting. It is the kind of recipe that rewards the first-time baker and still delights the seasoned host.

Autumn is about slowing down, pouring something warm, and making room at the table. A pan of Fireside Brownies does exactly that. Pair them with a glass of tawny port, a dark-roast coffee, or a cold glass of milk, and let the evening stretch.
